Results
The experiment went as planned for the most part. The sand stayed in the filter leaving nothing but the water and salt. The water boiled off leaving the salt and a small amount of sand that was small enough to fit through the holes in the filter. But for the most part the only thing left in the 250 mL beaker was the salt. During the boiling some of the salt was ether splashed up or was carried by the evaporating water because the sides of the beaker had a layer of salt crust.
Conclusion
This experiment showed that you could separate physical mixtures with out to much trouble if you know how too. That is why we say physical mixtures are easily broken down while chemical mixtures are much harder to take a part because they are bonded together.
Here are some suggestions for improvements. First you should weigh the sand and salt to see if you loss any of it in the experiment. When I rinsed the 100 mL beaker I should not have used all 10 mL of water. Also I was not expecting the water to boil so violently. I had a lot of dried salt on the table from splashing.
